Get the Message?

TODAY’S BUZZ TIP | February 20, 2009

Okay, so we’ve done a lot of talking about press releases, press kits, celebrities, pitching and such.  What I should have emphasized at the outset is the most important tool you need for PR success, a strong message.  Your company message is the foundation of any marketing and PR strategy.  Without it, and you are literally flying blind.  So what is a corporate message?  It’s a concise and factual description of who you are, what you do and who you target.  So answer these three simple questions and you will be on your way to developing your message:

–What does your company produce or provide?

–How is your company different from the competition?/ What makes it unique?

–What is your target market?

And by all means keep it simple. It’s a corporate message not an advertising slogan.  And also, the simpler the message, the more likely you will remember it during an interview.  Lastly…repeat, repeat, repeat.  Reinforce the message by including it in all of your communications, both written and verbal.  After all, we want everyone to get the message.
