The cornerstone of a PR program for designers and manufacturers is product placement. It’s all about getting your product in as many media outlets as possible. The key is to target the right media editors and to ensure that they know you exist. That means sending them press releases when you launch a new collection or product, followed up by a lookbook/brochure many months before the season begins i.e. if you are currently presenting Fall 09 to buyers/wholesale customers, then this is the time to also show it to the press. In terms of current product placement opportunities, right now certain magazines are still working on summer stories. Many regional publications, such as Hamptons Magazine here in the NY-area are working on summer features as we speak.
Here’s what the editor is looking for in her own words, “We’re looking for beachwear for boys and girls– swim accessories and clothing options in small kids sizes (2-4 depending on what the sample size is). I’d also love some high res image/catologue shots of kids in looks and bathing suits.”
So give them her a shout if your product fits the bill. The only caveat: your clothing should be available in the Hamptons. Send images and email pitch to:
(And please don’t contact her unless you can meet this specific request. That’s my only caveat : )
