The best way to get your products and your company in the national press is to first get exposure in your community.  Not only is pitching and contacting local editors easier, it’s also a gateway to building your brand.  The fact is that national editors, including top bookers for mammoth shows like Oprah, Today Show, etc., scour local media outlets for unique story ideas.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been contacted by a national media outlet because they saw a piece on a client in a local newspaper, television program or blog.

So jumpstart your PR program, and hone it to perfection, by applying all the PR skills you’ve learned so far towards your local newspaper editors and television stations.  The smaller your community, the more accessible these outlets will be.  You can even just pick up the phone and call your local business editor; after emailing your press release first of course.  And oftentimes these local outlets have a variety of sections that provide opportunities for exposure from management changes columns to corporate events and product features.

So pick up your local paper and give them a shot today.
