End of the Year. Time for a Plan!

We’re coming to the end of the year unbelievably. It’s holiday time and everyone is thinking Xmas but it’s also a great time to start thinking about your strategy for 2010.

First look back on this year and what you did to promote your brand. What worked and what didn’t? What coverage had the most impact on your business? Recently I had a client use sales as a measurement of PR success. Well that’s not at all fair, realistic or accurate. PR’s success builds gradually. If done right, it will raise your company’s visibility, credibility and ultimately lead to brand equity and, yes, more sales. But you have to have a solid plan for success. Below are some of the things you should be thinking about when putting together your plan for 2010:

Calendar of Events: Events that worked in 2009. Also explore new ideas/event to consider for the new year both events that you sponsor and others relevant to your industry.

Social Media: If your company doesn’t have a Twitter or Facebook page then get one set up asap and put together ideas on how to market via these important vehicles.

Trade Shows: Look into trade shows in your industry and do your research. Only participate in those that continue to draw quality crowds: important buyers and the media. If you have already participated in trade shows, think about which ones were successful for your company and ditch the ones that weren’t. One of my clients decided to only participate in two trade shows in 2009 and they didn’t see any adverse impact, in fact it was quite positive as wholesale orders rose significantly during the year. Clearly, they didn’t miss a step with their key retailers.
